Assisting Glyndebourne trustees pro bono in developing a new opera house – to be delivered within the timeframe of only one closed season. The challenge was to maintain the ‘flavour’ of a countryside site and preserve the unique character of the Glyndebourne audience experience.
Worked with the architect to approach the building in two phases so that the first phase could be built whilst the existing opera house was still in use. Used exceptional quality traditional materials to maintain the established ambience and designed to be comfortable and modern, with high integrity acoustics.
Accepted by the audience as an exceptional replacement with tremendous atmosphere and a hugely respected design, built at the lowest cost per seat of any opera house in Europe – and delivered as required, in one closed season.
